Tamanna Kalhar's vocals have been described as "Lydia Lunch haunting." Inspired by themes of alienation, dispossession and half-remembered Cocteauesque nightmares, she spins and weaves wordscapes of the poetical and political.
She debuted in 2006 as vocalist and co-lyricist on ethno-techno band Fun >Da> Mental's album All is War, a provocative protest against the Iraq War. Her vocals on 'B4 I leave' were remixed by renowned Osaka-based producer Altz. The infectious psych-house track became an underground club hit.
A second collaboration followed in 2015 on A Philosophy of Nothing mixed by legendary producers Mick Glossop (Van Morrison/PIL/Ruts) and Paul Tipler (Idlewild, StereoLab, TempleHead).
Her latest offering 'Bursting' on Ninety-Seven album, is an ancient Maori poem reincarnated into spacey electronica produced by David Harrow hailed as 'The Godfather of Techno' aka OICHO (Genesis P-Orridge's Psychic TV, Jah Wobble, Anne Clark).
"The tone of Tamanna Kalhar is unique. It's under your skin and never leaves. Able to express sorrow, despair and hope in an unorthodox manner."
Aki Nawaz, Fun>Da>Mental
"Then we get to the title track of the album 'Broken Bones - A Philosophy of Nothing' with discordant drum and percussions, sinister insectoid soundscape overlapped with the soft and ethereal voice of Tamanna Kalhar."
Wicked Spins Radio
"My favourite song is the title track . . . Tamanna Kalhar's vocal is incredible; sonically it's really interesting and the piano playing is wonderful."
